Jason Van Genderen’s fans are impressive. Geoffrey Rush. Baz Luhrmann, Anthony LaPaglia. A modern-day ‘Storypreneur’, Jason’s history is seeded at the intersection of the advertising, marketing + short filmmaking worlds.
His own narrative is one of serendipity re-invented. In 2008 he famously threw away his high-end production gear and made a short film on a mobile phone that kick-started a new global revolution in storytelling. His $57 ‘film-that-could’ won over $35,000 in prizes globally and cemented Jason as one of the world’s most celebrated Pocket Filmmakers, with numerous invitations to share his infectious enthusiasm as a guest presenter at film festivals & creative symposiums.
Tropfest NY, Aspen Short Film Festival, Edinburgh International Film Festival, Sydney Film Festival and 2013 Sundance London have all played host to Jason’s films and talks. Largely documentary based, Jason’s short mobile films have also found a homes in the Australian National Film & Sound Archive and the Smithsonian Institute. In May 2015 (in celebration of the medium) he established the Pocket Film Academy to help give everyone the chance to film their stories on their smartphones.
His philosophy is disarmingly simple. Great storytelling transcends the perceived barriers of budget, experience and equipment. When you have a beautifully pure story idea… sometimes the simplest of tools can be the secret to making the magic come alive.
